The most important feature you can build for the Nigerian market is an exit.

A lot of product decisions that founders struggle to explain start making sense once you understand this. Why do Nigerians prefer transfers over cards even when cards are available? Why do one-time payments outperform subscriptions? Why did pay on delivery become so popular in Nigeria despite the operational problems it created?

Nigerians want the ability to exit easily when something goes wrong. The average Nigerian user operates inside systems that fail often enough to make flexibility valuable. Power is unstable. Banking networks fail unexpectedly. Policies change suddenly. Some vendors stop replying after payment. Refund processes become long stories. That environment trains people to avoid situations that are difficult to exit. That logic eventually shows up in digital behaviour too.

After enough experiences like this, people avoid commitments that feel difficult to reverse. They choose processes that give them more control. They delay decisions until they feel certain they can back out safely. That's why most Nigerians prefer transfers because nothing leaves their account without deliberate action.

One-time payments outperform subscriptions because users know they can reassess later. Many customers ask too many questions before paying because they are trying to avoid getting trapped in a bad experience. Someone may struggle to commit to a N5,000 monthly plan and still pay N40,000 once if the one-time payment removes future uncertainty. A monthly subscription assumes stable liquidity. Many Nigerian users do not operate that way. Income can be irregular, delayed or unpredictable which makes recurring commitments feel riskier than larger one-time payments.

Founders spend time trying to increase commitment while many users are trying to preserve optionality. Many Nigerian users are willing to commit after they trust the experience. They just want to know they can leave without stress if things stop working. That is one reason transfers still dominate, pay on delivery survived for years and lifetime deals often outperform subscriptions in the early stages of Nigerian products.
