The Importance of Having a Good Marketing Department

Marketing is often the last function to get proper investment in Nigerian businesses. Here's why that's a costly mistake.

In too many Nigerian businesses, marketing is still treated as an afterthought — the department you staff last, cut first, and blame when sales are slow. This is a structural mistake that compounds over time.

A good marketing department does three things that no other function can do: it creates demand before sales needs to close it, it builds a brand that commands pricing power, and it generates the data that informs every other business decision.

The businesses I've seen scale fastest in Lagos all share one trait: they invested in marketing infrastructure early. Not influencer budgets — infrastructure. Analytics, CRM, content systems, paid media expertise. These compound.

If your business relies entirely on referrals and hustle, you're one bad quarter away from a serious problem. Marketing is how you build a pipeline that doesn't depend on any one relationship.
